PRL-8-53 HCl is generally considered to be a memory and learning enhancer. In the lone study with rats, taking PRL-8-53 120 - 150 minutes before a cognitive test helped drastically. Memory was tested at 24 hours after dosing and 96 hours with positive results compared to a placebo.

The fact that older subjects saw the most nootropic benefit from taking PRL-8-53 HCl supports the concept that dopamine modulation plays a major role in PLR-8-53's effects. Up-regulating the normal age-related lessening of dopamine production that is associated with cognitive decline could have a significant positive impact on both learning and memory.

PRL-8-53 reverses the catatonic and ptotic effects of reserpine. PRL-8-53 is relatively non-toxic, with an oral LD50 in mice of 860 mg/kg,  giving the drug a high therapeutic index. Doses above 8 mg/kg have brief hypotensiveeffects in the canine.High doses depress motor activity in the rat and mouse, with the ED50 for a 50% reduction in motor activity of mice at 160 mg/kg. PRL-8-53 displays spasmolytic effects.
